I arrive at the hotel by mid-afternoon, and as I’m parking I realize I don’t even have Wren’s number. Hopefully she won’t mind me showing up unannounced.

After knocking on her door for a few minutes, I realize she must be out. Fuck. Why didn’t I get her number?

Heading back down to the lobby, I decide to wait for her there. I settle into a comfy leather sofa beside the large stone fireplace and sit so that I can watch the door for when she arrives.

About thirty minutes into my wait, I hear some commotion over by the Activities Desk. I glance over, and one of the hotel staff is pointing at me. I nod, and he waves me over.

“Hey guys, what’s going on?” I say as I approach the desk. I recognize the one who had been pointing at me. I think he’s the younger brother of my friend Jake who does Search and Rescue too.

“You’re Wilkes Davis, right?”

I nod.

“You do Search and Rescue with my brother, right?”

I nod again. “Yep, you’re Mark, Jake’s brother, aren’t you.”

“I am. So, we have a guest who went out earlier today. She was supposed to be back by now. We have GPS tracking on our machines, and it hasn’t moved in the last hour. We think she might be in trouble.”

Fuck. I need to wait for Wren, not go rescue some lost tourist. But I know my duty, I signed up for this. “Understood. Let me go get my pack from my truck. If you have a tracker I can take with me on one of your machines, I’ll go find your missing hotel guest.”

The look of relief on his face reminds me of why I do this. I turn and head outside, grabbing my safety pack from the backseat of my truck along with my gloves and a thick jacket. I jog around the side of the hotel and meet Mark where he said he’d be warming up a machine for me.

I hope on the snowmobile after securing my pack. Mark hands me the tracker as I position my boots on the side rails. “See that blinking red light? That’s the snowmobile you are looking for. I think she made it about ten miles out, I’m afraid it will take you a while to get to her.”

“No worries, man.” I am just about to take off when something occurs to me. “Hey Mark, what’s her name? I’ve learned from experience it always goes easier when we know their name and call to them as we approach.”

He nods and steps back as I rev the engine. “Makes sense. Her name is….he checks his phone. Oh right, Wren Grayton.”

The air leaves my lungs. I think my heart stops beating.

“And it looks like a storm is rolling in this evening. Hope you can find her fast. Thanks so much for this, man.” He walks back into the hotel, leaving me in stunned silence.

Then a feeling of determination like I’ve never experienced in my life comes over me.
